What is ONDO (Ondo Finance)? The governance token beside tokenized Treasuries, checked with public data

Illustration for: What is ONDO (Ondo Finance)? The governance token beside tokenized Treasuries, checked with public data

ONDO is the governance token that sits beside Ondo Finance, an issuer that turns US Treasuries and similar assets into tokens. Its link to those Treasuries is rarely explained.

This article checks three things against public data and the issuer’s own documentation: what kind of token ONDO is, how its price has moved so far, and where and how it can be held.

Every figure was measured on 25 September 2026 at 11:32 JST. It is written for people holding crypto with their own money, and it neither recommends a trade nor predicts a price.

What ONDO (ONDO) is

Name Ondo
Ticker $ONDO
Launched Transferable from Jan 2024
Market cap rank 41st ($2.61bn)
Price $0.5356
Issuer Ondo Foundation (Cayman Islands)

ONDO is the governance token of the Ondo DAO and of Flux Finance, a lending protocol the DAO governs.

The initial supply is 10 billion tokens, and the documentation states there is no scheduled or planned inflation. About 4.87 billion are in circulation today, a little under half of the total.

The Ondo Foundation is a nonprofit Cayman Islands foundation company with no beneficial owners. It shares a name with Ondo Finance, which issues the Treasury products, but the two have separate roles.

Why a token like ONDO came about, and what it changes

What was inconvenient about holding Treasuries

US Treasuries, and funds that invest in them, are normally held through a brokerage or bank account. Trading and settlement follow business days, so nothing moves over weekends or public holidays.

Using them as collateral, or moving them somewhere else, also means going through the financial institution that holds the account.

Stablecoins move on-chain around the clock, but simply holding one earns nothing. In the United States, the GENIUS Act passed in July 2025 bars payment stablecoin issuers from paying interest or yield to holders.

What changes once Treasuries become tokens

The Ondo Foundation’s stated mission is financial inclusivity and market efficiency through on-chain, institutional-grade financial products.

USDY is designed, in the issuer’s words, to combine the accessibility of a stablecoin with high-quality, US dollar-denominated yield. It is open to qualifying non-US individual and institutional investors.

OUSG accepts mints and redemptions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, although the amount that can be handled instantly in any 24-hour period is capped.

Flux Finance, a lending protocol forked from Compound V2, handles open assets such as USDC alongside permissioned ones such as OUSG, and OUSG can be posted there as collateral.

The social impact

Time and borders

Yield from US dollar government debt can now be reached outside US market hours, and by eligible holders who are not in the United States.

Capital efficiency

An asset backed by Treasuries can serve as collateral on-chain, outside a financial institution’s account.

Scale

On 25 September the issuer’s site showed $2.28 billion held in USDY and $318.6 million in OUSG. This is a system already in use, not a plan.

How the rules are made

The Foundation’s listed activities include issuing governance tokens. Flux Finance’s economic parameters and contract upgrades are decided by proposals and votes from ONDO holders.

Proposals and voting records stay on-chain where anyone can read them. That is the difference from rules decided entirely inside one company.

The limits

  • Not everyone can hold them: USDY excludes US persons, and OUSG is for qualified investors only
  • The backing assets are held and managed by the issuer and established financial institutions, so trust in them is still required
  • ONDO is a voting token. It pays no yield and is not a claim on the Treasuries

Who can buy what

The following was checked against Ondo’s official documentation on 25 September 2026. It is not legal advice.

USDY

US persons (people in the United States or US persons under Regulation S) cannot buy it, and neither can people in listed jurisdictions such as Canada, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

People in the UK, the EU, Singapore, Hong Kong and some other places must meet that jurisdiction’s professional or qualified investor standard.

Buyers first complete onboarding and identity checks, then mint USDY with USDC. On some networks there is a $5,000 minimum.

The pages checked did not describe restrictions on buying USDY on exchanges, or any holding period.

OUSG

Investors must be both an accredited investor and a qualified purchaser, two terms from US securities law.

The most common routes are individuals with a net worth over $5 million or entities with over $25 million in assets. Identity checks require ID, proof of address and evidence of accredited status.

The minimum investment is $5,000 for instant transactions and $100,000 otherwise. OUSG can only be held in non-custodial wallets, not in an exchange account.

ONDO

ONDO’s transfer restrictions were lifted in January 2024 and it trades on exchanges. On 25 September neither OKJ nor bitbank listed it, and Hyperliquid offered only a perpetual contract.

If you live in Japan

In the pages checked, Japan does not appear on the prohibited or restricted lists for USDY or OUSG. Nor do they state that individuals living in Japan can apply.

Before applying, check Ondo’s list of eligible jurisdictions and its identity requirements.

What makes ONDO different

It sits next to products that put Treasuries on-chain

USDY is a tokenized note backed by short-term Treasuries or similar assets, and OUSG invests in short-term Treasuries through funds. Both are separate tokens from ONDO.

Holders change the rules by voting

In the Ondo DAO, ONDO holders vote on on-chain proposals that set economic parameters and approve smart contract upgrades. The voting system is a fork of Compound’s Governor Bravo, run through Tally.

A proposal needs 100 million ONDO behind it, voting lasts three days, and the quorum is 1 million ONDO. After a vote passes, a one-day timelock runs before the change is executed.

Investor and team allocations are locked

According to the documentation, the seed and Series A investors each hold under 7%, released over 48 months after a one-year lock. The core team’s allocation carries a five-year lock-up, and locked tokens can still vote.

How ONDO has moved so far

As of 25 September the price had moved +29.4% over twenty-four hours, +37.3% over seven days and +43.9% over thirty days. Against a year earlier it was still down 42.7%.

Within a single day it ranged between a high of $0.5365 and a low of $0.4157, a band of close to thirty percent in twenty-four hours.

The all-time high was $2.14 in December 2024, and the price now sits about 75% below it. The all-time low was $0.0822 in January 2024, the month the token became transferable.

Looking at daily values over the past year, the highest was $0.968 in October 2025 and the lowest was $0.243 in April 2026: roughly a fourfold gap inside twelve months.

Turnover across all venues was about $1.16 billion over twenty-four hours, more than 40% of the market capitalisation changing hands within a day.

What to watch from here

Where things stand now

Dates as given in the issuer’s official blogs and documentation, checked on 25 September.

  • January 2023: OUSG announced and the Ondo DAO launched: live
  • February 2023: the Flux Finance lending protocol went live: live
  • August 2023: USDY announced: live ($2.28 billion held on 25 September)
  • January 2024: ONDO transfer restrictions lifted: tradable
  • July 2026: Ondo Chain plan replaced by the Ondo Network, first used for perpetual contracts: live
  • September 2026: the first three Intelligent Portfolios launched: just launched

The Ondo Network is described as able to host other applications, but no start dates are given for them.

Sources of demand

In the documentation, ONDO’s use is voting in the Ondo DAO and on Flux Finance. If more people want a say in those decisions, that is demand built into the rules rather than a matter of sentiment.

On 24 September the issuer announced a new set of portfolio products powered by BlackRock. Even so, nothing in the documentation passes the balances of those products on to ONDO holders.

Who stands behind it

The documentation lists a $4 million seed round and a $20 million Series A. The voting rules and the supply are published, and the chain itself can be read by anyone.

Points of concern

  • The price moves widely: about 75% below its peak, with a fourfold range within a single year
  • Only a little under half of the supply circulates, so more tokens can still reach the market
  • Treasury yield is not attached to ONDO, and it is easy to confuse with USDY or OUSG
  • Rules for tokenizing real-world assets are still being written in many countries

Where ONDO is listed (public data)

On 25 September 2026, neither OKJ (46 markets) nor bitbank (62 pairs) listed ONDO. Other exchanges in Japan were not checked for this article.

Hyperliquid lists an ONDO perpetual contract, but not the ONDO token itself on its spot market. A perpetual tracks the price; it does not deliver the ONDO token itself.

At 11:32 JST on the same day, the public figures were: maximum leverage 10x, 24-hour turnover about $148.0 million, and open interest about $79.7 million. On the same venue BTC allows 40x and ETH 25x.

The funding rate was +0.00671% per hour, about 0.16% per day, paid by buyers to sellers.

With leverage, a small move against a position can take the entire margin.

Holding ONDO

ONDO is issued on Ethereum. When sending, choose a wallet that supports it, and send a small test amount before the full transfer.

This section records public figures. We do not recommend trading ONDO or using any particular exchange.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Does holding ONDO pay Treasury yield?

No. Yield belongs to USDY and OUSG, which eligible investors buy from the issuer. In the documentation, ONDO’s role is governance voting.

Q. Can ONDO be bought on a Japanese exchange?

Of the two checked in this article, neither OKJ nor bitbank listed ONDO as of 25 September 2026.

Q. Is Ondo Chain running?

In July 2026 the issuer said it would not build a chain in the traditional sense and would move to the Ondo Network instead. That announcement did not describe a role for ONDO.

In summary

  • ONDO is the governance token of the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance, ranked 41st by market capitalisation
  • Treasury backing and yield belong to USDY and OUSG, not to ONDO
  • The price sits about 75% below its peak and covered a fourfold range within one year
  • Neither OKJ nor bitbank lists it, and Hyperliquid offers only a perpetual contract

💡 Comparing ONDO with other markets

The markets screen in Hype Trade lists Hyperliquid markets by turnover and price move, so ONDO can be compared against the rest on the same scale.

The funding plan table works out a position size from the amount you are prepared to lose on one trade, before any order is placed.
