Figures published under the Ethena name belong to two different tokens, and they are easy to mix up. USDe is built to track one dollar; ENA governs the protocol and trades like any other coin.
This article checks three things against public sources: where ENA currently ranks, what the token is actually used for, and why a token of this kind is needed at all.
Every figure was measured on 20 September 2026 at 11:00 JST. It is written for people holding crypto with their own money, and it recommends nothing and predicts nothing.
Same name, two different tokens
USDe is designed to sit near one dollar. At the time of measurement it traded at $0.9996, with a twenty-four hour move close to zero, which is what a token holding a peg looks like in the data.
ENA is the governance token of the same protocol. It traded at $0.2175 and had moved +26.1% over the same twenty-four hours. That is not unusual for a governance token; it is simply a different thing.
The sizes differ too. At the time of measurement USDe was capitalised at $4.84 billion and ENA at $2.20 billion: one protocol, two entirely separate sets of numbers.
The practical risk is holding ENA while thinking of it as the dollar-tracking part of the protocol. The peg belongs to USDe alone and does not extend to the governance token in any form.
Where ENA ranks today
Rank is set by market capitalisation, which is the circulating supply multiplied by the price. At the time of measurement ENA sat 45th and USDe 23rd.
For scale, the top of the list was BTC at $1,628 billion, ETH at $320 billion and USDT at $183 billion. ENA came to $2.20 billion, and USDe to $4.84 billion.
Among the tokens trading near a dollar, and looking only at the top thirty, USDe came fourth in size behind USDT in third place, USDC in sixth and USDS in sixteenth.
Turnover in ENA across all venues came to about $844 million over twenty-four hours, close to 40% of its market capitalisation changing hands within a day.
ENA circulating supply was 10.095 billion coins against a maximum of 15 billion. Rank counts only what circulates, so the third of the supply not yet issued is absent from the figure.
Ranks move daily, and this one moved within hours: ENA was 47th earlier the same morning and 45th by 11:00. The order of magnitude is the durable part, not the position itself.
Comparing a market with its neighbours in the list is a quick way to see how much money stands behind it. Positions swap places constantly; orders of magnitude rarely do.
What the token is used for
Ethena’s public documentation is specific. ENA “is used to govern parameters of the protocol”, and it names what those parameters are.
- The composition of the assets backing USDe
- Whether new backing strategies are introduced
- How protocol revenue is allocated in future
- The membership and the remit of the Risk Committee
In practice most decisions are delegated to committees rather than settled by a direct vote. Holders appoint those committee members on a rotating basis, which is the lever they actually hold.
ENA can also be staked, which returns sENA, the staked form of the token. Unstaking is subject to a cooldown period before the ENA itself can be withdrawn.
Change the composition of the backing and you change how USDe holds its peg. The decisions ENA carries a say over are therefore the same decisions a USDe holder is relying on.
Why a token like this is needed
Whether USDe stays near a dollar depends on what sits behind it and where the hedges are placed. Those are choices, not constants, and they get revisited as market conditions change.
Something has to decide who makes those choices and how. ENA is the instrument that answers that question: it carries the say over the parameters and over who sits on the committee.
Read that way, the price of ENA reflects how that say is valued, plus whatever the market expects about future revenue allocation. It is not a claim on the yield paid to USDe holders.
The division of labour is worth being precise about: holders appoint the committee, and the committee handles the day-to-day calls. Not every parameter goes to a vote.
For someone using USDe rather than trading ENA, the useful part is that changes to the backing pass through published votes and a named committee. Who decides is visible, which is not true everywhere.
What the venue sets, and where it trades
On Hyperliquid, ENA carried a maximum leverage of 10x. On the same venue BTC allows 40x and ETH 25x, and a lower cap is the exchange saying margin can disappear faster in this market.
Turnover over twenty-four hours was about $76.6 million and open interest stood at roughly $97.9 million, so an amount comparable to the standing position changes hands within a day.
The funding rate was +0.0073% per hour, meaning buyers were paying sellers. Extended out, that is about 0.18% per day, charged whether or not the price moves in your favour.
Order size steps in whole coins. For a market priced in cents that means order values arrive in fairly coarse jumps rather than smooth increments.
There is no ENA spot market on that venue. Checking the 46 markets published by OKJ and the 62 pairs published by bitbank, neither carried ENA either, so it is not bought directly with yen there.
What that venue lists is a perpetual contract; it does not deliver the ENA token itself.
A market up 78.8% in thirty days can travel at that speed downwards as well.
This section records public figures. We do not recommend trading ENA or using any particular exchange.
What tends to work, and what tends to go wrong
✅ What tends to work
Separating USDe from ENA first, then lining ENA up against other markets on the same scale: rank, circulating supply, leverage cap, funding.
Reading what the token governs before reading the chart also saves a lot of time spent hunting for reasons behind a move.
⚠️ Common pitfalls
Holding ENA while still thinking of Ethena as the dollar-tracking part, and being surprised by the width of the moves.
Adding size precisely because a market is rising. One loss beyond the band takes considerably longer to recover than it took to create.
In summary
ENA and USDe are discussed under one name but are separate instruments: $2.20 billion at 45th for ENA, $4.84 billion at 23rd for USDe, measured on the same morning.
The token governs the backing of USDe, the introduction of new backing strategies, the future allocation of revenue, and the membership and remit of the Risk Committee.
Staked, it becomes sENA, with a cooldown period before it can be withdrawn again. None of that makes it a claim on the yield USDe holders receive.
It exists because those parameters have to be decided by someone, repeatedly, and the protocol puts that decision in the open rather than behind a desk.
What public data can tell you stops at how a market is treated today. Where the price goes next is not written in any of these fields, however carefully they are read.
💡 Lining the numbers up side by side
The markets screen in Hype Trade lists Hyperliquid markets by turnover and price move, so any market can be compared against the rest on the same scale.
The wallet viewer reads the ERC-20 balances held by an address you enter, in one list (as of 20 September 2026).
(Based on public CoinGecko and Hyperliquid data and Ethena’s public documentation, checked on 20 September 2026 at 11:00 JST. Not a recommendation to buy or sell; prices move sharply.)
